Combining basic garment colours

Basic clothing colours are timeless. A white, navy blue or beige dress will always be elegant, as will a cream, grey or black coat. For evening wear, silver or gold tops are also basics you can't go wrong with, whatever your figure.

You don't need to worry about matching neutral colours, from light to dark. However, combining them with stronger tones will make your outfit pop.

These colours are a must in your wardrobe, but on their own, they're not enough to give your wardrobe a dynamic feel.

The difficulty? Not all blues go together, and the same goes for all colours. If you're absolutely looking for a green shirt to go with your new emerald jacket and black trousers, don't hesitate to take it with you on your shopping trip to find exactly the right shade.

There's one rule you need to know if you're going to make a mistake: shades go together. In other words, either choose muted tones or bright tones. For example, a pastel blue doesn't go well with a sky blue, whereas a sky blue and an electric blue are a perfect match.

Use a colour wheel to choose beautiful colour combinations. They only need to be very close on the circle to match.
